One of my favorite places to shoot is Virginia Beach, a stunning location with a rich history and much to offer. In this blog post, I’ll tell you more about Virginia Beach and why you should consider it for your next photo session.

The History of Virginia Beach

Virginia Beach is the largest city in Virginia and the 44th most populous in the United States. It is located on the Atlantic coast, at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. The area was first inhabited by Native Americans, who called it Chesepioc. The first European settlers arrived in 1607, led by Captain John Smith. They established the first permanent English colony in America at Jamestown, near Virginia Beach. Virginia Beach became a popular resort destination in the late 19th century, thanks to the development of railroads and hotels. It also played a significant role in World War II as a naval base and a training site for amphibious landing operations. Virginia Beach is a thriving city with a diverse economy, culture, and lifestyle today.

What can you find in Virginia Beach?

Virginia Beach has something for everyone, whether looking for nature, history, art, or entertainment. Here are some of the attractions you can find in Virginia Beach:

  • The Virginia Beach Boardwalk: This three-mile-long promenade stretches along the oceanfront. It features shops, restaurants, hotels, museums, and monuments. You can enjoy the views of the beach and the waves or rent a bike or a rollerblade and explore the boardwalk. The boardwalk is also home to several events and festivals throughout the year, such as the Neptune Festival, the Patriotic Festival, and the Holiday Lights at the Beach.
  • The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center: This is one of the largest aquariums in the country, with over 800,000 gallons of water and more than 10,000 animals. You can see sharks, rays, turtles, seals, otters, and more. You can also experience interactive exhibits, such as the Adventure Park, where you can zip-line through the trees, or the IMAX Theater, where you can watch 3D movies on a giant screen.
  • The First Landing State Park: This is the site where the first English settlers landed in 1607. It is also a natural preserve with over 2,800 acres of land and 20 miles of trails. You can hike, bike, camp, picnic, or fish in this park. You can also see diverse wildlife and plants, such as bald eagles, ospreys, deer, foxes, cypress trees, and wildflowers.
  • The Military Aviation Museum showcases vintage aircraft from World War I and World War II. You can see planes from different countries and eras, such as biplanes, fighters, bombers, and jets. You can also watch live demonstrations and air shows or ride some planes.

When is it open?

Virginia Beach is open all year round, but the peak season is from May to September. This is when the weather is warmest, and the beach is busiest. If you want to avoid crowds and save money on accommodation and attractions, you should visit during the off-season (October to April). However, remember that some businesses and events might be closed or limited during this time.

What to wear?

Depending on the season and your activities, you might need different types of clothing for your visit. In general, you should pack light and comfortable clothes that can be layered. For example, you might need shorts and t-shirts for summer days on the beach or hiking trails; jeans and sweaters for cooler evenings or indoor venues; jackets and hats for winter months or windy days; swimsuits and towels for swimming or water sports; shoes that are suitable for walking or biking; sunglasses and sunscreen for protection from the sun; etc.

Is it family-friendly?

Yes! Virginia Beach is a great place to visit with your family. Some attractions and activities are suitable for kids of all ages. For example, you can take them to the aquarium or the park, play mini-golf or arcade games, watch movies or concerts, eat ice cream or pizza, etc. You can also find many family-friendly hotels and restaurants offering children’s amenities and menus.

When is it best to visit?

The best time to visit Virginia Beach depends on what you want to do and see. Spring and fall are ideal seasons if you want to enjoy the beach and avoid crowds. If you want to experience the peak of summer fun and are okay with crowds, summer is your best bet. Winter is a good option if you want to save money and enjoy cooler weather.
