Snow Queen Birthday Photoshoot: A Portrait Photographer’s Frozen Blizzard Adventure with Her Frenchie

What does it feel like to be born and celebrate your birthday in the coldest month of the year? For me, I embrace it with a conceptual photoshoot for myself, just like I do for my clients. This year, the first Monday of 2025 greeted us with a breathtaking winter storm that transformed DC, Maryland, and Virginia into a picturesque snow globe. Schools were closed, flights were grounded, and the streets were blanketed in soft, powdery snow. For me, this magical day marked the start of a new year and a cherished tradition: my annual personal and birthday photoshoot.

Planning the Perfect Winter Snow Photoshoot and Wardrobe Selection

This year’s photoshoot had been months in the making. Back in the heat of summer, I envisioned a look that would stand out from everyday snow-themed photos—a sophisticated, Ice Queen or Elsa-inspired aesthetic featuring a monochromatic baby blue color scheme. I wanted something elegant, timeless, and unique, so I incorporated pearls and a vintage-inspired, voluminous hairstyle.

After experimenting with three different outfit variations—ranging from a long dress to various tops and coats—the final ensemble came together beautifully. The result was majestic: a flowy skirt paired with a floral blue cropped top, topped off with a cozy baby blue fur jacket. This combination brought my vision to life, blending regal elegance with wintery charm, all while keeping me warm.

Finding the Dreamy Winter Backdrop for Ice/ Snow Queen-Themed Portraits Experience

Since the theme was Ice or Snow Queen, I definitely needed the snowiest background possible. Luckily, I didn’t have to look far. Just around the corner from my studio in Frederick, I walked to Westview Park, which had transformed into a winter paradise. The lush green trees stood in striking contrast to the snow-covered streets, creating the perfect natural backdrop for the photoshoot. This hidden gem truly elevated the shoot’s aesthetic, adding a touch of serenity and elegance to every frame.

Finding the Best DMV Photographer for the ‘Portrait Photographer’: A Team Effort Behind the Camera

This photoshoot wasn’t a solo mission—I needed someone to take my portraits in the freezing cold. While I had been planning and interviewing some of the best portrait photographers in the DMV area for this experience, the heavy snow brought everything to a standstill. With roads shut down and no way to drive to a photographer’s location, I found myself in a bind.

Luckily, my partner stepped up as both volunteer photographer and assistant, armed with my trusty camera and a 200mm zoom lens. Before heading out into the cold, I gave him a quick crash course on portrait and full-length photography settings. To my delight, he exceeded all expectations—not only capturing stunning photos but also directing poses to create a variety of angles and styles.

All I had to do was pose while he snapped away, capturing both posed and action shots. Between takes, we reviewed the images on the camera’s back screen to ensure we were getting the desired results. Once the shoot was complete, all that remained was for me to retouch the raw files and select the best ones.

Planning a Smart Wardrobe for a Snowy Photoshoot: How to Stay Warm and Embrace the Cold

I won’t lie—shooting in freezing temperatures was a challenge. I had to plan my wardrobe carefully to stay warm while spending extended time in the snowy park. I learned my lesson from a previous photoshoot at the Eiffel Tower in Paris during a windy, cold March. Back then, I wore a strapless thin dress and open-toe heels, which left me freezing and unable to last long.

This time, I came prepared with warm winter leggings and boots cleverly hidden under my long skirt to maintain the aesthetics. My fur jacket kept most of me warm, though my arms still felt the icy chill—I should have added warmer gloves.

We knew bringing my Frenchie, Nala, out in the beginning would be a bad idea, as French Bulldogs get cold easily due to their short fur and compacted airways, so we kept her inside until the end. We dressed her in a green quilted jacket and brought her out for the last 10 minutes of the shoot. It was her official debut family photoshoot, and she was a natural in front of the camera!( here are her newborn puppy photos)

Capturing Magic and Creating Memories

Now, I’m eagerly sorting through the photos, excited to frame our favorite shots for our family wall collection. This photoshoot reminded me of the beauty that emerges when creativity meets love, even in the face of unexpected challenges like storms or wardrobe hiccups.
