The Beauty of Maryland

Maryland is a beautiful place to live, work, and play. It has so much to offer, from its rich history and culture to its diverse landscape and wildlife to its vibrant cities and towns. No matter your interests, you will find something to love in Maryland.

One of the places that I love the most in Maryland is Ellicott City. Ellicott City is a charming historic district that lies in the valleys of the Tiber and Patapsco rivers. It was founded as a mill town in the late 1700s by three Quaker brothers from Pennsylvania, who built a flour mill on the banks of the Patapsco River. The city grew into a thriving community and became the first terminus of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad outside of Baltimore City in 1830.

Ellicott City has preserved much of its 19th-century architecture and character, making it a popular destination for tourists and locals. You can stroll along Main Street and admire the quaint shops, restaurants, and galleries that line the cobblestone sidewalks. You can visit the Ellicott City Station, the oldest surviving train station in the United States, and learn about the history of railroading in America. You can also explore the Patapsco Valley State Park, which offers scenic trails, waterfalls, and recreational activities along the river.

Ellicott City Culture

Ellicott City is not only a place of beauty but also a place of culture. The town has been home to many influential people and events that have shaped Maryland’s arts, literature, music, politics, and beyond.

Some of the culturally significant people who have lived or worked in Ellicott City include:

  • John Wilkes Booth, the actor who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln in 1865. He attended St. Timothy’s Hall School in Ellicott City from 1852 to 1853.
  • Babe Ruth, was the legendary baseball player who married Helen Woodford at St. Paul Catholic Church in Ellicott City in 1914.
  • Wallis Simpson, was an American socialite who married King Edward VIII of England after he abdicated his throne in 1936. She was born in Blue Ridge Summit, Pennsylvania, but spent part of her childhood in Ellicott City with her aunt Bessie Merryman.
  • Edward Norton, was the Oscar-nominated actor who starred in films such as Fight Club, American History X, and The Incredible Hulk. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, but grew up in Columbia, Maryland, near Ellicott City.
  • Tori Amos, is the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter known for her piano-driven songs and eclectic style. She was born in Newton, North Carolina, but moved to Ellicott City with her family when she was two.

Ellicott City has also hosted many cultural events and festivals celebrating its heritage and diversity. Some of these include:

  • The Ellicott City Spring Festival, features live music, crafts, food, and children’s activities on Main Street every April.
  • The Howard County Fair, showcases agricultural exhibits, carnival rides, games, entertainment, and contests at the Howard County Fairgrounds every August.
  • The Korean Festival, honors Korean culture and cuisine with performances, demonstrations, vendors, and activities at Centennial Park every September.
  • The Midnight Madness Holiday Shopping Event, invites shoppers to enjoy extended hours, discounts, refreshments, and entertainment at participating businesses on Main Street every December.
