Dupont Circle Culture
Dupont Circle is one of Washington, DC’s most cultural and historic neighborhoods. It has been a center of social and political activism since the 1960s when it was a hub of anti-war protests and civil rights movements. It later became a stronghold of the LGBTQ+ community, hosting the first Pride march in 1975.
Dupont Circle is also known for its artistic and literary heritage. Many famous writers, artists, musicians, and poets have lived or worked in Dupont Circle, such as:
- Walt Whitman: The poet who wrote “Leaves of Grass” served as a nurse during the Civil War and tended to wounded soldiers in a hospital near Dupont Circle.
- Sinclair Lewis: The novelist who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1930 lived in Dupont Circle for several years and wrote some of his best-known works, such as “Main Street” and “Babbitt.”
