The History of the Georgetown Waterfront
The Georgetown Waterfront has a rich and fascinating history that spans over 300 years. It was once a bustling port during the Colonial period, where ships loaded and unloaded tobacco, flour, coal, and other goods. It was also a center of cultural and social life, with taverns, theaters, and markets. The waterfront witnessed many important events in American history, such as the arrival of the first steamboat in 1815, the burning of the city by the British in 1814, and the construction of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canals in 1828.
In the 20th century, however, the waterfront declined as a commercial hub and became a neglected and polluted industrial area. It was used as a parking lot, a dump site, and a storage space for barges and cranes. Only in the late 1970s did a group of visionary residents and activists begin to advocate for transforming the waterfront into a public park. After decades of planning, fundraising, and collaboration with local and federal authorities, the Georgetown Waterfront Park was completed in 2011. It is now part of the National Park Service and offers a beautiful green space for recreation, relaxation, and enjoyment.
What can you find in the Georgetown Waterfront?
The Georgetown Waterfront Park is a gem in the heart of the city. It stretches along 10 acres of land between the Potomac River and the historic buildings of Georgetown. It features a variety of amenities and attractions for visitors of all ages and interests. You can find:

When is it open?
The park is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The boat dock is available from April to October from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. The ice skating rink is open from November to March from noon to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends.
What to wear?
The park is an outdoor space that is exposed to the elements. Depending on the season and the weather, you should dress accordingly. Generally, it is advisable to wear comfortable clothes and shoes suitable for walking or biking. You may also want to bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, or an umbrella for protection from the sun or rain. If you plan to go on the water or play in the splash park, bring a swimsuit, towel, or change of clothes.
Is it family-friendly?
